Rumors are flying about the fate of One Direction now that a solo tune written and performed by key member Harry Styles has surfaced online.

The song, “Eyes Wide Open,” is an emotive piano ballad on which Styles croons, “Don’t let me go/ Cuz I’m tired of feeling alone.” Perhaps these lyrics are directed at Styles’ ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift; or maybe it’s a universal message for anyone who has broken up with someone they still love.

Although Styles is the first member of 1D to “go solo,” it’s unlikely that One Directioners have anything to fear, because a rep from the band’s camp told  that he’s not in fact leaving the band, and the song was actually recorded almost two years ago as a demo for a potential One Direction album.

That said, it looks as though Styles could have a promising solo career if “Eyes Wide Open” is any indication. The 19-year-old heartthrob wrote the lyrics to the pop ballad, which is brimming with longing and heartbreak. His emotional delivery is right on the money, proving that he doesn’t need the back-up harmonies of his 1D bandmates to make an impact.
